Matthew 5:13-16 (NIV)
“13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
What did Jesus mean in the Sermon on the Mount when he stated: “You are the salt of the earth” and “You are the light of the world.”?
Well, let’s start by saying that before there were refrigerators, people used to cover meats in salt to preserve them. That being said, when Jesus tells his disciples that they are the salt of the earth what he meant was that they would preserve righteousness in the world by being Christ like. Without Christians and Christianity, the world and humanity will go rotten.
Jesus also said that we are to let our light shine through. Isn’t it wonderful how Jesus placed us in a special position to lead people to Him? Not by our own merits, but by grace through faith. Our mission as Christians is to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). In order to accomplish that we have to first, be disciples ourselves. Disciples of Christ, that is. We are to surrender our will to Him and show the world the gifts and blessing our Lord has bestowed upon us: let our light shine through. Everything we do must be guided by Him, must reflect Him.
So I encourage you: stay salty, keep shining!
