The names of God

Throughout the Bible we can identify several names to refer to God. Today, I want us to take a journey through the Word to learn and understand what these names are, their origins, and meanings.

In the Bible we can often see the name "El" and other names that share that root. This is because it was the most common term used in the Middle East to refer to a divinity.

We will then see a list of the names by which God is known throughout the Bible. We will differentiate between the names the Lord uses to refer to himself and which people use to refer to Him. We emphasize that the names used by people to refer to God often denote His characteristics or attributes and even His way of acting.

1) ADONAI – Signifies "The Lord" and is a word of Hebrew origin. It first appears in Exodus 34:6. It was also the unused térmiin Psalms 8, Isaiah 40:3-5, Ezekiel 16:8, and Habakkuk 3:19.

2) YHVH– It means "I am who I am" or "I am"—It was thecname by which God answered when Moses asked what he should say to the people when they asked who sent him (Exodus 3:14).

I would like to emphasize that the pronunciation of this term is unknown because out of respect for God his name was not pronounced, and he was called Adonai (The Lord). As in Ancient Hebrew it was not written with vowels, over the years it was about looking fora pronunciation for YHVH. From this came the names Yaweh (used by Catholics) and Jehovah (used by the Protestants). For the purposes of this article, we use them interchangeably.

3) EL EYON – Means "The God Most High ". It was the term used in Genesis 14:20 and Psalms 9:2.

4) EL OLAM – It means "The Eternal God". It was the term used in Genesis 21:33.

8) HSADDAI – Means "The All Powerful". It was the term used in Genesis 17:1-3, 48:3 49:25, 35:11, and Psalms 90:2.

9) JEHOVA JIREH – Means "The Lord will provide." It was the term used in Genesis 22:14.

10) JEHOVA-RAFA – Means "The Healthy Lord". It was the term used in Exodus 15:25-27, Psalms 103:3, 147:3, and 1 Peter 2:24.

11) JEHOVA-SHALOM – Means "The Lord is peace". It was the term used in Numbers 6:26, Judges 6:22-24, Isaiah 9:6, and Hebrews 13:20.

12) EL – Means – "The Strong God". It was the term used in Exodus 20:5, 15:2, Numbers 23:22, and Deuteronomy 7:9.

13) YHWH – ROHI - Means "The Lord My Shepherd". It was the term used in John 10:11 and 10:14-16.

14) YHWH SABAOTH – Means "The Lord of Armies" and appears almost three hundred times in the Bible. It was the term used in Psalms 24:10 and 46:7.

15) YHWH – NISI – It means "The Lord is my banner". It was the term used in Exodus 17:15-16.

16) JEHOVA – SHAMMAH – Means "The Lord ispresent". It was the term used in Psalm 46 and Ezekiel 48:35.

17) ELOHE ISRAEL – "God the God of Israel". It was the term used in Genesis 33:20, Psalms 68:8, and Psalms 106.

18) JEHOVA TSIDKENU – Means "The Lord ourrighteousness". It was the term used in Jeremiah 23: 6 and 33:16.

It is not my intent to be exhaustive, but to provide guidance that encourages the reader to search the Bible and see the implications and meaning of God's names in the context in which they were used. In my life I have seen God manifest as so many of these names mean, it is a significant, personal experience. How has He manifested in your life?
